This week’s chem. laboratory is another horrible day. Another emotional upheaval. Horror Wednesday!! I seemed to be so stressed every time together with JH on this. Come to think about it, if JH is not together, I might even break down or drop dead. This week’s practical was about infrared spectroscopy of greenhouse gases. The instructions for the method was not very clear, and we were trying to figure out how to operate the system and the demonstrator who might be honours or masters students didn’t really explain much and we had to call for them almost every step even using the IR spectroscopy as well. It was a lousy Asian guy that we both dislike. And sometimes they have this “how-come-you-don’t-know” kind of look, as if they are reluctant to teach. Or maybe it’s the way they do things here, do your experiment on your own with minimal guidance.
And here comes the most annoying, frustrating and infuriating part. I had ask a question to solve a question and the Caucasian demonstrator was at first quite patient hinting about solving the question but slowly getting frustrated that I didn’t get what he was thinking. And along the whole process, the irritating Asian guy was snickering just beside me! I was so furious and mad at their attitude. How can an Asian guy not help his own Asians? JH and myself loathed Asians here who think and behave they are white when they are born or lived here for many years. They will never ever become white no matter what. While we were completing our lab – report, our Caucasian demonstrator and lecturer were discussing that this year’s chemistry students are much smarter than previous years and they finished up they’re practical very early around 4pm and had left leaving some behind. That’s a very clear hinting that we are dumb and still finishing up our practical report!! While they were commenting, there were some Asian guys still finishing up behind us. That such a racist comment!! Saying we Asians are dumb!!!!!!!! We are going to proof them wrong with our Singaporeans kiasuism!! Yes!! As I quote JH’s new slogon! Score Distinctions and Beat the Caucasions!!
At least we have found a solution by planning to attend some year 1 Chemistry lectures to help us brush up and refresh our memory. I’m sure we can both pass this obstacle and emerge victorious with our last laughs.

I had my first chemistry practical on Wednesday. And it’s the worst I had in my life. We came into the laboratory and each of us was handed a practical workbook with 5 different experiments listed inside. We were scheduled to work on an Absorption Spectrophotometry experiment this week. And luckily I had JH as my lab partner, so we can try and figure out and help each other out during the experiment. The lecturer briefly went through safety rules in the laboratory and left us to start doing our experiment on our own. He left to lecture a class before he came back towards the end of the experiment. During his absence, there were two student demonstrators to guide us and help us find answers to our questions. It’s literally read the experiment before hand and just come in to attempt doing it, and that’s it. No more spoon feeding from the poly lecturer where he brief you on the experiment and guide you along when you face any difficulties. Even though I know the way of teaching might be different from back home, I still experience culture shock. However, from now I know I have to learn to handle it.
Another shocking thing was that, the laboratory is not as advance as TP namely the spectrophotometers and some other equipment used. I might even be right in guessing that they might not even have an HPLC!! TP had so many high tech equipment in the analytical lab that I realized how good our labs were. Hiaz….Singapore is good…While I was doing the experiment, I found it quite annoying that the sinks were not at the end of working tables, they were like at the far side of the lab. And all the different concentrations of acids were directly opposite the sinks. The weighing of solids was done at the other far end of the room. In the middle were a whole range of different computers and their analytical equipment. There wasn’t plenty of space to work while using that analytical equipment and ended up accidentally spilling some solutions. I remember I had to walk repeatedly to the fume hood, sink, near the acids and computer. One of the student demonstrators was an asian who was not very helpful even though he was there to help students. =.= So ended up our lecturer was kind enough to show us how to use the machine to obtain results or we would be left struggling and not finishing the experiment and our lab report!!! Who said ang mo are racist?! Only some are…even that asian is worst. Agrh…..

Today, was my first day in school. I had to buy Japanese textbook and workbooks for my year long of Japanese language lessons, which I had wanted to do so long ago. I’m quite excited to learn more about Japanese because next time I can understand better the jap dramas, my ps2 games and even visiting Japan! Hee…actually I had to make a choice between French, Korean or Japanese and finally decided with Japanese because JH is learning as well. So we can help each other out when faced with difficulties. But the books don’t come cheap, costing about A$80 for all. I’m using the integrated course in elementary Japanese textbook and workbook, I’m sure those learning jap should be using this book as well.
Our sensei/e is Seiko Yasumoto a lady native teacher whose command of English is quite good. We can understand her without much difficulty and she can crack a joke or two as well which cracks up the whole class making the lessons more enjoyable. The lecture theatre is unlike your typical air-conditioned place with individual chairs with rotate able portable tables, there are many rows of benches that look like some park benches accompanied with tiny long wooden tables. There are many rows of tables that stretch up to two levels, where one can even walk down from level 2 staircase. It’s a staircase with handles and not just steps. The teacher uses 2 chalkboards on each side of the LT that can be pull up and down for teaching. The only modern feature in the LT is probably only the overhead projectors.
After the jap lesson, I had to rush over to the Chemistry building which is like a distance away to attend my chem. lecture. Chemistry lectures are usually quite boring but I enroll these lessons so that if I want a major in chemistry instead of pharmacology, I can still choose. This second year will be a testing ground of what I will really like to take up in my final year.
I hope I can cope with the studies and workload because I have a feeling it will be overwhelming! Oh no………..!
