Yesterday, I bought an old kung fu classic from CD Rama. It's called the The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. I read from movie reviews in First magazine about this and was curious at how amazing was this movie. Initially, I was not a fan of movies of the 60's and 70's which don't look high tech nor were there any eye candy to make up for. But I was completely absorbed into the show because of the well cheorographed kung fu moves that can leave you in a trance and hungry for more action. Modern era drama serials and movies nowadays rely much of the computer graphics or shooting techniques to help an actor become a highly skilled kung fu exponent, where the director often focuses on the actor's face when he's riding a horse or sparring instead of featuring the whole body the whole duration of the fight or sequence. Since I understand the cantonese dialogue, at times I couldn't resist laughing at the jokes.

Starring Gordon Liu Chia Hui, as a Qing rebel, Liu Yu De, who wanted to learn kung fu to rid of the oppressive Qing officials went all the way to Shaolin Temple. He had to arduously master one training "chamber" after another. First, he had to master how to jump across a pool area with bundle of sticks floating in the pool without falling. Another test was to strengthen his hands through hailing two buckets of water with his arms at 90 degrees and walking up a slope. If his hands were less than 90 degrees, the knives fastened at his arms would start poking at his waist! After finishing with the arm strength training, came the eye coordination test where he had to move his eyes according to the pendullum in front of him or he will risk getting burn by giant incense placed just next to his face if he moves his head instead of eyes. Next came the training to have a iron head by banging against sand bags. Finally these basic training can he start practising basic kung fu to mastering various weapons. When the abbot wanted to confer him a master of one of the 34 chambers of Shaolin, Liu wanted to create a new 36th Chamber and helped teach ordinary people the shaolin kungfu. However, he was stopped by the abbot's disciple and that he would only agree if Liu beaten him in sparring. Liu used various weapons to combat his senior but was unsuccessful and finally founded a new weapon which looks like the Bruce Lee's nanchaku but its a 3 stick version that beaten his senior. Liu left Shaolin Temple to look for potential disciples and created the 36th Chamber after killing all the Qing oppressors.

To think i have conscientiously keeping all the letters to participate in the ST 160th Anniversary Car Hunt to win a Mazda6 2.3L costing S$85,000, to let it slip by me. Only to solve it at 11.30am on 16th July. It makes me feel helpless and resigned followed by disappointment that a chance in life is so near yet so far. I have a penchant for joining contests and never failed to try whatever contest that interest me. My contest joining had served me well as sweet rewards do come. I remembered my first few winnings were cds, concert tickets and carton of pepsi. My first won and watched concert was Ah*Mei Concert, a contest in the Friday Weekly newsapaper. I submited 5 entrys and hoping to win that precious 1 ticket to watch my idol at that time because i wasn't allowed to go to that concert at all. I wanted to prove my mom wrong that even if she didn't allow me to go, she would still have to let me go if i win that ticket. And I really won that concert ticket! It makes me feel like as if Charlie was awarded with the last Golden Ticket to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory! That was a win I vividly remembered. Another time, my mom was pleased with a carton of pepsi to quench her thirst. Then came last year, I participated in my first successful sms win of a 12 cartons of bird's nest. That delighted her further by prompting me to join more contests..Hee..Well...after this entry, I feel much better than just now. Anyway, we shall not dwell with the past and look forward to more challenges ahead. A journey is waiting.......

When you are waiting for something, it didn't came. And when you are not waiting for it any longer, it came knocking at your doorstep. That was what happened to me today. I had been waiting for offer letters from Universities since I graduated. Two expected rejection letters from local uni. And today 1 surprising offer letter from UNSW. I was offered 72 units of credits off from the 144 units of credits for whole 3 year course. That equates to 1.5 years studying in UNSW. That's even shorter than the Sydney which is 2 years. Both unis are reputable and one of the top group of 8 Australian Universities with good research facilities. I had earlier chose Sydney over UNSW because of the architecture and shorter duration but now with an offer letter from UNSW...Dunno what to think. I better come up with a pros and cons list up really soon. Or maybe readers out there give me some suggestions.

Not to disppoint, another foodie account!

2 days ago, I made a trip to Suntec for the last time before the Gacha Fair ends. After that, Li Leng and myself were thinking of a place to eat until we walk pass by The RiceTable Restaurant just a stone's throw away located at level 3. Ok lah...i know my description is so cliched. Ok back to topic, the layout of the restaurant together with the soothing ambience make the eatery look outrangeously expensive but to our surprise it’s an affordable $12.90 ++ for a lunch set and $18.90 ++ for a dinner set. We were led to a table for two. The table was lined with batik table cloth and in the centre laid a flat rectangular heater. Barely warming our rattan seat, our drinks and food arrived. Twelve small dishes were laid in front of us. Mainly chicken dishes like soto ayam (chicken soup), ayam kalio (chicken curry), sate ayam (chicken satay) and ayam panggang (grilled chicken). The others like rudjak manis (fruit salad), otak (grilled fishcake), daging rending (spicy beef stew), tahu telor (tofu omelette), kangkong belachan (waterconvolvulus), sambal udang (spicy prawns), ikan goring (fried fish) and sayur loden (vegetable stew).

First, I attacked the familiar stuff like kangkong, those curry vegetables and beef rending since LL doesn’t take beef. Kangkong usual ah…just put the belachan to make wonders to the kangkong. Vegetable stew same like u get from those chap chai stall anywhere in Singapore. The beef rending for I can say it’s still not the best, the beef was quite tough, maybe it’s the tendons. Then I sampled a spoonful of chicken stew, not bad, taste like mee soto soup. Chicken curry was just 2 middle portion of the wings, Nothing special. Chicken satay was quite tender as compared to beef….anyway can’t compare…hee…both different things like apples and oranges..Ok enough crap. Wah…grilled chicken was good, taste like those Chinese like to cook the gong bao ji ding that kind, chicken in dark sweet sauce with dried chili kind of taste. Fruit salad was refreshing, after those heavy meats. You can get better otak elsewhere. The tofu omelette was crispy at some parts of the dish plus topped with rojak sauce laced with peanuts. 1 complain about the sauce, it’s too salty!! But overall, delicious dish. There were only 2 spicy prawns on that dish. Nothing spectacular. The fried fish in sweet and sour sauce was another must try, the fish was freshly deep fried and the combination of the sauce was heavenly.

Overall, I enjoyed my lunch at The RiceTable Restaurant. I don’t mind going again. Ok stop reading and go try it for urself!
