Movie of the Week! 20/02/04
Something's Gotta Give -----------Spoiler alert……..dun read if u want to watch…………

After PCI term test, we (Leslie,Hewei,Si jia, Jia Hui and myself) went to CS to catch a movie. I was in favour of watching Along Came Polly featuring Jennifer Aniston, as u know as teenagers we like to watch beautiful people on screen. Jia Hui and Si Jia wanted to catch the above titled movie so we went along with it. I was thinking we are going to watch an oldie show with quite a few veteran actors and actresses maybe except for Keanu Reeves. The show started with a scene of Jack Nicholson as Harry,a matured(i meant old) man and a very young and pretty gf, Marin going to a house in a countryside. Along with all the filting, Marin’smom name Erica came home with her sister to find a stranger in the house. It was a funny misunderstanding and in the end the four of them spend a dinner together. That night, the pretty gf was having a fun time with Harry till he got an heart attack. Must be too excited...lolz...so Erica did CPR on him. In the end Harry was made to rest near the hospital and end up u know where. Erica was rather pissed to find this man having to recuperate in her house where she both stay and work as a playwright. Around 2am, she wanted to change into her night wear and Harry just walked in. U know lah…he had a lame excuse of thinking it’s the kitchen. Awkward moments next morning and some innocent walk along the beach to further develop their relationship. Erica had a date with Harry’s doc (Keanu Reeves! JH fav). There was a part where Harry chatted with Erica through the net and they both ended up meeting in the kitchen for a snack of pancakes. It was rather funny inviting some 1 in the house to meet each other who are like just 10 steps away. They were about to come to the u know what moment when Marin walked in to surprise them. From the scene, can see Erica and Harry have shown an interest with each other liao. Of course being a woman and Marin too, can sense something is brewing. So broke up with Harry…and both of them “drop into a river full of love”. That’s such a Chinese saying I think. Then u know what happen…..quite XX but tastefully done. There’s a passion scene, cutting of turtleneck white shirt by Harry, so I was thinking maybe she wore turtleneck because of her divorce and hence lost her confidence in men, wore turtleneck to keep her distance. On the other hand, JH commented she is conservative. Harry recovered and went back to the city. Marin called about her future stepmother who’s ard her age she freak. So Erica went to the city to meet up her ex husband and future wife for dinner in a restaurant, in the midst of dinner, she changed from a confident modern woman to a heartbroken woman. The sight of Harry in the arms of a young lady……… U know what happen next…all the running and chasing thingy.. but I realized Diane Keaton is really amazing actress who can act in this heart wrenching scene! I can really feel the despair and disappointment for this man she love so deeply. I can feel a tear or two rolling… Erica was waiting for a good explanation but it came to a nought so she picked the leftover pieces of her broken heart and hailed a taxi. Haiz….a man with a stomach full of pride just couldn’t say the 3 magic words. Later he suffered a “heart attack” again but found it to be heart ache. 6 months drag with no news of each other, both met in a Paris restaurant, Erica dating the doc much to Harry’s disappointment. There were two things in this scene I like. A scene of Harry looking at something and took out his long sighted glasses which actually belong to Erica and vice versa. Ah…some weird chemistry. Another one was when the doc took out a red velvet box and gave Erica. Harry left rather despondingly and came to a bridge and cried manly tears. Ah….how can a movie not end with happy ending…….She chased after him and both hugged……..In the last scene, ”Table for 4 ½”, Harry said. I smiled.
This movie is witty, charming and clever romance story. This is one of my favourites this year and have a feeling this movie will be up for Oscars for Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Actor. Lolz.... Mark my words. When the dvd come out for this movie, I might buy it!! Region 1!!

Now for the sumptuous dinner at DING TAI FENG!! Table for 4!! Jasmine, JH, SJ and myself were sampling the fragrant tea after we sat down. We came down to order some specialties recommended by SJ. We ordered steamed pork dumplings, steam crabmeat & pork dumpling, steamed shrimp & pork dumpling , yang chon men, hk kalian, tofu with vermicelli, fried pork cutlet and tau sa bao. Hehe….what a spread right? I was eagar to try the food here a few months ago, only to get my chance on 20/02/04. The yang chon men has slightly springy handmade noodles and mellow soup, quite pleasing to the tastebuds. My all time favourite vege! Hk kalian which is topped with fried onions and is especially soft and crunchy. Next comes out pork dumplings! I gingerly pick the dumplings and dipped in vinegar. The first bite in the mouth will release the hot gravy with pork filling. Hmmmm…heavenly. All the dumplings have these similar soupy greatness in them. Its best eaten hor or it loses its effect when its cold. Tofu with vermicelli was so-so. The fried pork ribs was tender, spicy and delicious even though slightly salty. Tau sa bao is not too sweet which is good…… Whole dinner at 19 bucks each, quite a satisfying dinner. Took some pics outside…hehe…will pose it soon. But I was busy eating and forgot to take pics of our food!!!! Sobs…….

Later that night, we went to Swissotel hotel and went up to the 70 storey and I saw a beautiful city streets bath in night lights. I couldn’t help snapping pictures with some expert advice from Jasmine. SJ and JH went up to see noisy environment of a bar and commented the crowd is too old for us plus noisy and smoky with poor lighting. In the end we went down to a lounge, which wasn’t too interesting that we left to try Long Bar in Raffles Hotel just across the road. When we walked in, I could feel the floor was slippery and hear crunching sounds, I realized peanut shells were strewned all over the floor! JH had fun littering the ground…lolz…I thought the cleaners were pitiful having to clean the floors every night.
The setting in the pub is quite soothing with a authentic bar with bartender serving drinks dimly lit by green antique looking lamps, have a feeling I was transported into another era. The servers are dressed in what looks like batik with Hawaiian style kind of feeling. We were led to a table for 4 consisting of 2 rattan chairs and comfy sofa chairs. I was intrigued by those 1960s hand fans that are moving above us in synchronized manner. Lolz…we ordered 1 margarita and Singapore Sling plus fries to go with them. Margarita was a lemon or lime mild acohol that tasted tat bit bitter, I could feel a fuzzy warmness in myself after sips. Singapore Sling is something unique which is what tourists will order. Its alcoholic punch that didn’t strike a chord with me as it has an after taste that I didn’t like, still like margarita better. There was a live band above playing some oldies which I think was quite soothing. Overall, it’s a pleasant experience. It would be nice to visit again but with more people as it gets rather boring.
